Watch out for

- ·Apply oil immediately. Bare metal rusts again within hours indoors, minutes outdoors.
- ·For pitted rust, soak in white vinegar overnight before sanding.

What about a wire wheel?
Faster, but it removes more material and leaves a directional pattern. Hand sanding preserves the tool's edge geometry.
