The verdict

How close to mirror do you actually want to land.

2000 takes scratch patterns from 1500 and reduces them to a haze that compound clears in one pass — the standard last-sand grit for most paint work. 3000 takes that same haze and lays it down even finer, leaving a surface that polishes faster and reflects sooner. If you're going to buff with compound either way, 2000 is plenty. If you want less compound work and a deeper reflection, 3000 earns its keep.

Pick 3M if

Standard auto paint correction. Compound does the rest.

Pick 3M if

Show finish. You want the compound stage to be short and the reflection to be honest.
