The verdict
Hand-sand the whole project, or plug something in.
Gator's 24-sheet assortment is the cheapest way to sand a first project by hand — a sanding block and these sheets cover most of what a beginner needs. The Orbital Sander Disc Bundle costs more, but you get the sander, the backing pad, and the starter discs in one shipment, and the next project goes ten times faster. Hand sanding is the more honest start. The bundle is the better one if there's a second project coming.
Pick Gator if
One small project. Block sanding is plenty.
Pick 5-Inch if
The first project is the first of many. The sander pays for itself by the second.
